Updated: Jan 7

Who doesn't want to experience the intense feeling of orgasm? The tingling ecstasy, the sensual release and the feeling of simply letting go is something every woman expects to experience. Did you know that 75 percent of all women never get to experience orgasm through intercourse? And guess what? About 10-15 percent of women never reach climax under any given circumstances. Although the ultimate goal for us is to reach a climax, it's absolutely normal if you are having trouble with it.

8 Lesser known facts about the female orgasm

Let's expand on our knowledge about the orgasm and explore some of the little know facts about the female orgasm. We are going to start with some of the mental and physical benefits.

1. During orgasm, our body releases oxytocin. This helps relieve pain, relax your body and mind for at least 8 to 10 minutes.

2. The inability to reach climax is more common than you think. Stress, anxiety, age, lubrication, medical concerns are all factors that could cause your inability to orgasm. It's hard to pick a reason why this may happen.

3. As per a recent study, about 36.6 percent of women orgasm during clitoral stimulation and not penetrative sex. So, be experimental with positions and foreplay. Unwind, relax and enjoy yourself.

4. If you have been taking medication for anxiety or depression, it could heavily affect your arousal and your ability to achieve orgasm too.

5. We all know that in a relationship, communication is key. Instead of being confrontational, have open conversations to make the experience a pleasurable one for both of you. Figuring out what works and doesn't work for you, along with your partner is key.

6. It's no news that mental, emotional and physical issues can affect your orgasm. Often, we tend to stress about having an orgasm and forget to enjoy the process. So keep stress at bay and enjoy the experience.

7. On average, women need 13 minutes to reach climax during sexual activity.

8. A recent survey indicated that orgasm gets better with age. About 70 percent of the women surveyed in their 40s and 50s experienced an orgasm the last time they had sex.

Is it normal not to have an orgasm?

Here's another stat that will boggle your mind about female orgasm. Did you know that about 10 percent of all women have never experienced an orgasm, whether it's through intercourse, foreplay or even masturbation? Female orgasmic dysfunction is real. With this dysfunction, women have trouble achieving orgasm. It can even occur in women who are sexually aroused and have sexual stimulation. Age, medical conditions like diabetes, gynaecological surgeries, medication, stress can all be the reasons behind dysfunction. Don't let it stress you out. If you think you may have orgasmic dysfunction, consult a doctor to help diagnose your health condition and to fully enjoy the sexual experience. Sometimes it could be the underlying medical condition that could be causing this.

We need to understand that satisfying sex is different from reaching climax. Rather than just focusing on intercourse, why not explore masturbation, usage of sex toys and foreplay?
